Job summary

Trustly is building out its US engineering hub in San Francisco and aims to own the Payment Gateway end to end, including architecture, reliability, and banking partner integrations. The role requires senior hands-on leadership with strong distributed systems skills and production experience in payments.

You will learn and map a mature codebase with AI tools, write design docs, and drive implementation plans. You will help hire and lead the team that owns this domain.

Qualifications

• 10+ years building and operating production software systems.
• Experience with payments, banking or financial systems.
• Pager responsibility and incident handling.
• Ownership of unfamiliar, business-critical codebases.
• Daily use of AI coding tools for development.

Responsibilities

• Own the architecture, service contracts and production health of Payment Gateway.
• Own on-call, SLAs, incident response and root-cause fixes; no separate ops team.
• Meet observability standards and improve service performance each quarter.
• Use AI tools to map code, produce design docs and runbooks for engineers and AI agents.
• Lead hiring and shape the team responsible for this domain.
