Job summary

Trustly in San Francisco is seeking a senior engineering leader to own API and Partner Integrations end to end, including architecture, reliability, production readiness, and future roadmap. You’ll start by learning the codebase and mapping it with AI tools, then help hire and lead the team that owns this domain.

The role requires 10+ years of production software experience, payments knowledge, strong distributed systems design, and hands-on Java backend work.

Qualifications

• 10+ years building and operating production software systems.
• Hands-on experience with payments or banking systems where correctness and uptime matter.
• You have carried the pager and improved systems you built.
• Track record of taking over an unfamiliar, business-critical codebase and owning it.
• Daily use of AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot).
• Strong distributed systems design: data consistency, idempotency, concurrency.
• Clear writing; design docs and incident reports reused by others.
• Production experience with Java or a comparable backend language.
• Experience building integrations with bank APIs or data aggregators.

Responsibilities

• Own the architecture, service contracts and production health of API and Partner Integrations.
• Own the operation of services: on-call, SLAs, incident response and root-cause fixes.
• Meet observability standards and improve service quality each quarter.
• Use AI tools to map code and produce design docs, interface definitions and runbooks.
• Partner with engineers across the Americas and Europe to transfer knowledge.
• Direct AI-assisted implementation and verification of requirements.
• Help hire and shape the team that will own this domain.
