Job summary

Anthropic is seeking an experienced Software Engineer to join the Databases team and build the infrastructure powering Claude and research workloads. You will architect systems for billions of API requests and ensure reliability across GCP, AWS and diverse deployments.

Youll lead data storage, migrations, caching, and data movement, partnering with product and research to accelerate work while optimizing cost and performance.

Qualifications

• Significant experience in software engineering for production database or storage systems.
• Deep knowledge of distributed database architectures and OLTP systems at scale.
• Proficiency with SQL and major relational or distributed databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, Spanner, CockroachDB, DynamoDB).
• Track record of leading large infrastructure projects as an engineer or tech lead.
• Ability to balance rapid delivery with reliability of production systems.
• Strong technical leadership and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Responsibilities

• Define and drive database solutions for product and research teams.
• Design scalable database systems to support millions of users across Claude’s product ecosystem.
• Build and scale database systems through 100x+ growth while maintaining reliability and performance.
• Architect data storage solutions across GCP, AWS, first‑party deployments, third‑party deployments, and other environments.
• Develop database infrastructure serving both product and research workloads with varying performance needs.
• Build data movement infrastructure (migration tooling, backfill, and change data capture) to consolidate and move data safely.
• Design and operate caching infrastructure, including CDC‑driven cache invalidation, for fast, correct paths.
• Partner with product and research teams to understand data requirements and accelerate their work.
• Optimize database performance, reliability, and cost efficiency at scale.
• Make build‑vs‑buy decisions for database technologies.
