Job summary

Temporal is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for Compute in Temporal Cloud. You will help define and build durable compute primitives that span serverless runtimes, container fleets, and customer deployments.

The role focuses on making compute transparent, elastic, and observable across multi‑cloud environments. You’ll own essential services on the hot path of task execution, drive SLOs and incident readiness, and work across teams to maintain a cohesive platform.

Qualifications

• Significant experience building distributed systems or multi-tenant platform services.
• Strong systems fundamentals: concurrency, performance, reliability.
• Shipping platform primitives used by engineers or customers (APIs, control planes, data planes).
• Comfort owning outcomes: SLOs, incident response, improving on‑call quality.
• Excellent written communication; Go experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Invent: create new managed compute primitives for Temporal Cloud with clean APIs.
• Design self‑optimizing autoscaling systems for safe, predictable scaling of worker fleets.
• Define Open Source Server and Cloud boundary for compute capabilities; keep architecture cohesive.
• Own: architect, build, and operate services on the hot path of task execution.
• Deliver real‑world cloud integrations: IAM boundaries, credentials handling, networking, quotas, failure modes.
• Make operability a feature: SLOs, tracing, metrics, testing, incident reviews, hardening.
• Ship end‑to‑end: API design, rollout strategy, backwards compatibility, maintenance.
• Teach: design docs, reviews, leadership, mentorship.
• Lead across teams to land coherent platform changes.
