Job summary

Cambly Inc. is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to own the technical direction of our products, leading a fast-moving team of around 15 engineers.

You will own backend systems, APIs, data models, and services, and work across the stack with frontend, mobile, and data, using AI to inform decisions. You should have 7+ years in engineering, deep backend expertise, and a product mindset, with the ability to mentor others and raise the technical bar across architecture, reviews, and best practices.

Qualifications

• 7+ years of engineering experience and a track record of owning systems.
• Deep backend ability: API design, data modeling, and production systems.
• You build AI-first; directing AI coding tools to implement is part of your workflow.
• Owns work with strong technical judgment on scale vs. speed.
• Comfortable crossing stacks and shipping with a product mindset.
• Clear communicator able to explain trade-offs to engineers and non-engineers.

Responsibilities

• Own the product platform: design and deliver backend APIs, data models, and services.
• Make the hard calls on domain modeling, scale, and extensibility.
• Ship end to end from design through launch and own major initiatives.
• Work across the stack, including frontend, mobile, and data when needed.
• Set engineering standards and promote AI workflows as best practices.
• Grow the team by mentoring engineers and raising the bar.
