Job summary

Cambly is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to own the technical direction of our products. You will lead a fast-moving engineering team of around 15 engineers, backend-strong, comfortable across the stack, and accountable for delivering products from design through launch.

You will collaborate with product managers, designers, and engineers to set the bar for how the team builds. Our stack uses Next.js, React, and TypeScript on the frontend, with Python (Flask and FastAPI) on AWS and MongoDB on

Qualifications

• 7+ years of engineering experience with production systems.
• Deep backend ability: API design, data modeling, scalable services.
• You build AI-first and direct AI coding tools in practice.
• You own your work and balance scale vs speed decisions.
• Comfortable expanding scope beyond core stack.
• Product-minded with emphasis on usable learner-facing features.
• Clear communicator able to explain trade-offs to engineers and non-engineers.

Responsibilities

• Own the product platform and backend design and delivery.
• Make the hard calls on modeling domain and scale decisions.
• Ship end to end from design to launch.
• Work across the stack including frontend/mobile/data when needed.
• Set engineering standards and turn AI workflows into reusable practices.
• Grow the team by mentoring engineers and raising the bar.
