Job summary

WEX, Inc. is seeking a Staff Software Development Engineer to design, develop, and enhance agentic cloud-native solutions using Java, AWS, Kafka, Elasticsearch, and containerized architectures.

You will own critical components and collaborate across teams to deliver scalable, secure, and reliable backend services. You will contribute to RESTful APIs, engage in code reviews, troubleshoot complex problems, and stay current with emerging tech to improve engineering practices and customer

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
• 7+ years of software engineering experience designing, developing, and supporting enterprise-scale applications.
• Proficiency with cloud-based applications and infrastructure using infrastructure-as-code practices.
• Proficiency with event streaming platforms such as Kafka.
• Experience with Elasticsearch, including indexing strategies, query optimization, and data analysis.
• Experience working with cloud platforms such as AWS.
• Strong understanding of software engineering principles, data structures, algorithms, OO design, scalability, availability, and reliability.
• Strong problem-solving skills and ability to analyze complex technical challenges.
• Excellent written and verbal communication with a collaborative mindset.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and deliver scalable backend systems powered by agentic capabilities on cloud-native platforms.
• Contribute to architecture decisions to support highly available, secure systems.
• Build, test, and maintain clean, efficient code and RESTful services.
• Develop and optimize RESTful APIs and backend services.
• Engage in code reviews and cross-team collaboration to solve complex problems.
• Troubleshoot and resolve technical challenges across stacks and tools.
• Stay current with emerging technologies to improve engineering practices and customer outcomes.
