Job summary

SmartThings, a leading IoT ecosystem and Samsung subsidiary, seeks a Staff Software Engineer to own the Hub Applications team. You will write and review Rust code for millions of hubs, balancing performance, memory use, and reliability in resource-constrained devices.

You’ll drive long-term technical strategy, partner with firmware, security, cloud and product teams, mentor engineers, and help shape AI-assisted development and operational practices in a hybrid role based in Minneapolis.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field.
• 8+ years of production software engineering experience at staff level.
• Expert-level proficiency in Rust with ownership, async and concurrency.
• Systems programming in embedded Linux or similar constrained envs.
• Experience designing for unreliable networks and offline operation.

Responsibilities

• Own the long-term technical direction for Hub Applications domains.
• Lead large, cross-team initiatives from design through rollout.
• Architect for reliability, scale, and data flow between hub and cloud.
• Provide Rust leadership and guide evolution of code and legacy C integration.
• Mentor engineers and drive AI-assisted development practices.
• Collaborate with firmware, security, cloud, and product teams for aligned strategy.
• Participate in observability, incident response, and on-call rotations.
