Job Summary

GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW:

Inpatient Rehabilitation Services at Brigham and Women’s Hospital provides physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech and swallow services, and orthopedic technology services to patients on a consult basis across inpatient floors, ICUs, and the Emergency Department. The primary responsibility of the staff physical therapist is to provide patient care in accordance with State licensing regulations, departmental standards, policies, and professional standards of care.

The role offers rotation through seven diverse clinical teams, mentorship from experienced clinicians, opportunities for professional growth, and participation in departmental committees. This position is ideal for a Massachusetts-licensed Physical Therapist seeking clinical and professional development in a dynamic academic medical center.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Examine and evaluate patients’ physical therapy needs, formulating diagnoses and treatment plans.
  2. Demonstrate competency in clinical knowledge and skills specific to assigned patient cases.
  3. Consult with healthcare team members to coordinate therapies.
  4. Assist in triaging, prioritizing, monitoring admissions, referrals, and discharges.
  5. Manage assigned patient caseload.
  6. Engage in activities for professional development.
  7. Participate in departmental meetings and policy formulation.
  8. Supervise aides, support personnel, students, and trainees.
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

1. Graduate of an accredited physical therapy program.

2. Current unrestricted license to practice physical therapy in Massachusetts.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for managing diverse patient populations.
  • Analytical abilities and sound clinical decision-making.
  • Prolonged walking, standing, lifting, transferring, and positioning of patients and equipment.
  • Ability to work with critically ill patients and across all age groups.

Working Conditions

  • Hospital environment with exposure to blood, body fluids, hazardous materials, and odors.
  • Physical effort required for patient handling and use of equipment.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Assist with supervision and education of assistants and aides.
