Intuitive Surgical in Sunnyvale, CA seeks a Staff Mechanical Engineer to develop robotic endoscopes and explore a novel surgical robotics concept from proof of concept through detailed mechanical design, prototype manufacture, and pilot-level production.

The team, Future Forward, is a small cross-functional group creating innovative robotic platforms to address major healthcare needs. The role requires deep mechanical design skills, high-quality prototypes, and strong documentation.

Qualifications

• Minimum 8 years of experience developing medical devices.
• Experience integrating and optimizing electrical/optical sensors into flexible catheters or medical devices.
• Experience with catheter components and processes (braiding, laminating, coiling, laser cutting).
• Experience with plastics, molding, 3D printing, adhesives or epoxies.
• Data analysis of complex datasets.
• Familiar with all phases of product development lifecycle.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and verify flexible robotic surgical instruments in a cross-functional team.
• Develop test methods, fixtures, and measurement tools for components and assemblies.
• Analyze data from novel sensors to optimize performance, reliability, and accuracy.
• Generate requirements and design specifications for safety, performance, durability.
• Hands-on assembly and testing to support concept to pre-clinical activities.
• Research catheter suppliers and prototyping to enable rapid testing and risk analysis.
• Create and execute test methods to identify root causes of defects.
• Support preclinical labs and literature reviews to inform design decisions.
• Document design and manufacturing procedures, BOMs, drawings per SOPs.
