Job summary

BlackSky is seeking a Principal Mechanical Engineer for the Optical Payload team in Tukwila, WA. You will lead mechanical design and integration of satellite payloads, collaborating across internal and external partners to ensure designs meet rigorous space-grade requirements and production readiness.

You will mentor engineers and contribute as an individual contributor, applying Creo-based design, deriving from concept to production, while coordinating with avionics, structures, and thermal

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
• 12+ years in a mechanical engineering role.
• Experience maturing satellite/launch designs to drawings.
• Experience in mechanical design of optical systems.
• Familiarity with space system design requirements.
• Leadership of cross-functional teams on small to moderate efforts.
• Proficient in CAD for parts, assemblies and drawings.
• Knowledge of ANSI Y14.5 TD&T.
• US Person status is required.

Responsibilities

• Ensure payloads meet mechanical requirements through collaboration with internal and external partners.
• Lead mechanical design and integration of payloads into satellite structures.
• Deliver space vehicle designs, production plans, and test strategies with a multidisciplinary team.
• Design spacecraft mechanical structures and components with Creo.
• Generate and maintain part drawings, assemblies and BOMs.
• Document design and analysis data in technical reports and presentations.
• Apply engineering judgment balancing performance, manufacturability, reliability and schedule.
• Support manufacturing by providing design intent and addressing build issues.
• Develop tooling, fixtures and ground support equipment as needed.
