Job summary

Joby is seeking a Staff Mechanical Engineer to lead the end-to-end mechanical design of charging and thermal systems for global deployments. You will own architecture across power delivery, fluid handling, thermal management, and packaging, interfacing with electrical, controls, and field operations.

You will design and document in CATIA, procure prototypes, coordinate with contract manufacturers, and drive testing and validation for FAA certification readiness.

Qualifications

• B.S. or higher in Mechanical Engineering or closely related discipline.
• 8+ years of relevant engineering experience with complex hardware ownership.
• Experience designing fluid handling systems (coolant loops, pneumatic circuits, etc.).
• Experience designing power electronics enclosures and electromechanical assemblies for low-to-medium volume production.
• Proficiency in a professional CAD package; CATIA (3DEXPERIENCE) strongly preferred.
• Ability to produce manufacturing-ready drawings, BOMs, P&IDs, and assembly instructions.
• Hands-on shop experience; able to debug hardware in person.
• Strong cross-functional communication to align mechanical, electrical, controls, compliance, and supply chain teams.
• Willingness to travel internationally up to 15-20% for deployments and site support.

Responsibilities

• Own the mechanical architecture of charging and thermal conditioning systems—from requirements through design, build, and validation.
• Design fluid handling systems and manage thermal and hydraulic performance.
• Package high-power electronics into field-deployable enclosures with cross-functional teams.
• Produce complete engineering documentation: drawings, BOMs, and P&IDs in CATIA.
• Own prototype procurement, vendor selection, and coordinate fabrication with vendors.
• Lead design validation and testing programs; support certification with the compliance team.
• Support GSE deployments in the field, including installation and commissioning.
• Mentor senior engineers and establish design standards and validation frameworks.
