Job summary

Standard Bots in Boston is seeking a Staff Firmware Engineer to lead the Bolt base firmware architecture, covering drive and motor control, power and battery systems, sensors, and I/O. You will shape the firmware strategy from prototype to production.

You will mentor embedded engineers, define interfaces with navigation and safety software, and deliver robust hardware-in-the-loop tests. The role requires 8+ years in embedded firmware for battery-powered robotics and a track record of delivering

Qualifications

• 8+ years of embedded firmware development, including leading firmware for battery-powered products with motors through production.
• Strong background in motor control firmware (FOC, current sensing, encoders) for traction or steering drives.
• Mastery of C/C++ on microcontrollers, RTOS design, real-time scheduling, interrupts and DMA, and peripheral drivers.
• Fluent with oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, DMMs, and schematics; can diagnose timing, signaling and electrical issues at bench.

Responsibilities

• Define the firmware architecture across all base controllers; manage partitioning, communication, timing, update paths and diagnostics.
• Lead firmware bring-up for prototypes with electrical and mechanical teams on a fixed hardware schedule; develop BSPs, drivers and bootloaders.
• Make pragmatic trade-offs balancing long-term vision with timely delivery.
• Partner with electrical engineers to ensure boards are easy to bring up, test and debug.
• Set coding standards, reviews, test expectations and release processes for all AMR firmware.
• Own firmware for motion, power, and sensors; ensure data is delivered to robot compute.
• Define interfaces between firmware and navigation, fleet and safety software; with Bolt’s upper body.
