Job summary

Burns & McDonnell is seeking a Staff Environmental Scientist in Chicago to assist with environmental and siting studies, permitting applications, and data analysis for renewable projects, transmission routes, and water facilities. You’ll conduct site visits, prepare technical reports, and support GIS-based map production.

The role emphasizes environmental site investigations, compliance audits, and NEPA documentation, with frequent fieldwork and a strong emphasis on safety and quality.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Environmental Science or related field with required experience.
• Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
• Ability to clearly communicate technical information, both verbal and written.
• Basic knowledge of environmental site assessment methods.
• Basic knowledge of environmental compliance and compliance audits.
• Basic knowledge of the environmental permitting process.
• Basic knowledge of GPS and ArcGIS desktop environments.
• Proficiency in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Must meet driving and legal work requirements.
• Minimum GPA 3.0 preferred.

Responsibilities

• Assist in conducting environmental and siting studies and collecting project data.
• Assist in preparation of technical reports, photologs, and environmental field studies.
• Perform GIS-based map production per standards.
• Support environmental site investigations and erosion control efforts.
• Assist with environmental compliance audits and permitting applications.
• Support NEPA documentation and site selection studies.
• Ensure adherence to safety policies and company standards.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Education

Bachelor Degree in Environmental Science or similar with 4 years of related experience OR Master Degree with 3 years of related experience
