Job summary
Grafana Labs is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for the Tempo Databases team, working remotely in Germany. You will help shape Tempo as a platform, scale ingestion and queries, and drive open-source contributions.
The role emphasizes leadership, deep systems experience, and collaboration across product and observability teams. You will own critical components such as ingestion, storage, and query engines, design human and agent APIs, and push for performance, cost efficiency, and reliability
Qualifications
- Strong Go experience or a clear path to it.
- Deep experience building and operating distributed data systems in production.
- Operational mindset with ownership of production services and SLIs/SLOs.
Responsibilities
- Set technical direction on the hardest problems in Tempo roadmap.
- Lead multi-quarter initiatives from problem framing through rollout.
- Own architecture of core Tempo components: ingestion, storage, query, metrics generation.
- Design APIs for humans and agents and ensure deterministic, discoverable interfaces.
- Drive operational excellence, automate toil reduction, and push for Zero Ops.
- Mentor engineers and participate in on-call activities.
- Contribute to open source Tempo and engage with the community.
