Job summary

PROCEPT BioRobotics is seeking a Staff Embedded Software Engineer in San Jose to lead design, development, and optimization of embedded systems for medical devices. You will drive high-quality firmware, work with cross‑functional teams, and ensure regulatory compliance.

The role requires extensive experience in MCU programming, real‑time software, and hands‑on debugging, with a focus on safety‑critical development and automation testing.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in CS/EE/BME or equivalent.
• 8+ years embedded software for medical devices, or 5+ years with a Master’s.
• MCU programming in C/C++ is required.
• Real-time embedded software programming experience required.
• RTOS and bare metal design familiarity.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to coordinate multiple projects and be self-directed.
• Strong troubleshooting and debugging across software/hardware.
• Experience with software architecture, testing practices, and coding standards.
• Experience with automated software testing for embedded systems.
• Experience debugging in embedded IDE.
• Experience with I/O protocols (I2C, SPI, UART, RS485).
• Hands-on firmware for motors/ robotics/ aerospace.
• Cyber-security concepts (secure boot, authentication, encryption).
• Familiarity with medical device regulations (ISO 13485, ISO 14971, IEC 62304).
• Knowledge of safety-critical software development (MISRA, ISO26262, DO-178).

Responsibilities

• Develop new product embedded software across several projects.
• Design, code, test, and document embedded software for prototypes and released products.
• Collaborate with Software, Electrical, Mechanical, Systems, Quality, and Regulatory teams.
• Follow SDLC with requirements, architecture, design, implementation, debugging, and testing.
• Write verification and validation protocols and reports.
• Support software on customer complaint analysis team.
• Mentor teammates and grow technical capability.
• Own tasks under time pressures of new product development.
• Maintain compliance with QMS and regulatory policies.
• Adhere to Quality & EHS policies.
