Job summary

Gusto is seeking a highly skilled Staff Data Scientist for its Time Products Data Science team. You will leverage experimentation, causal analysis, and AI-assisted analytics to guide how small businesses track time, communicating insights to product and exec stakeholders.

You’ll collaborate with Product, Engineering, Design, and Finance, mentor peers, and help define scalable data models and roadmaps that drive product health and customer value.

Qualifications

• 7–10 years of data science experience in a product-focused software company.
• Strong SQL skills and comfort with Python.
• Proven ability to apply statistical methods, causal inference, AI tools, and experimental design to real business problems.
• Excellent communication skills with cross-functional influence.
• Experience leading large, technically complex projects with measurable business impact.
• Mentoring others and elevating data science craft across the team.

Responsibilities

• Lead ambiguous problems, design analysis frameworks, and scale structures across product domains.
• Partner with product managers, engineering leads, designers, and operations to align strategy.
• Apply advanced statistics, causal inference, experimentation, and AI analytics to surface drivers.
• Design, analyze, and interpret experiments with clear trade-offs and data-quality considerations.
• Deliver high-impact projects with defined deliverables and timelines.
• Present findings to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Work independently to prioritize, create, and deliver data science roadmaps.
• Mentor others and raise data science standards across the organization.
