Job summary

Slack is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join the Data Infrastructure team within the Data Engineering organization. The role focuses on building secure, scalable data platforms that power analytics, ML, and data-driven decision-making across Slack.

As DRI for core data services such as Pinot and Trino, you will ensure uptime and performance, drive improvements in security and cost efficiency, and mentor other engineers while advancing observability and self-service tooling.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of software, platform, or infrastructure engineering experience.
• Proven ability to build, deploy, and operate distributed infrastructure at scale.
• Strong background with big data and infrastructure technologies (EMR, Airflow, Pinot, Trino, Hive Metastore, Kubernetes).
• Proficiency in Python, Golang, Bash, and SQL.
• Experience with CI/CD (GitHub Actions), Vault, Terraform, Chef, and Grafana.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and operate reliable and scalable data infrastructure powering Slack's analytics and ML.
• Serve as DRI for multiple core data services (e.g., Pinot, Trino) ensuring uptime and performance.
• Drive security, cost efficiency, and developer experience across data infrastructure.
• Build automation and self-service tools for data workflows.
• Collaborate with data engineering, platform, and security teams to design scalable, governed solutions.
• Enhance observability, monitoring, and alerting with Grafana and related tooling.
• Mentor and coach engineers, modelling ownership and collaboration.
