Job summary

Interwell Health seeks a Staff Data Engineer to shape and scale its data ecosystem. You’ll own architecture, hands-on engineering, and governance across healthcare data platforms, collaborating with product, data science, and clinical teams.

You’ll lead design reviews, implement batch/streaming pipelines, and ensure HIPAA-compliant access to PHI while guiding a team of engineers toward scalable, secure data products.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent in CS/Engineering or related field.
• 7+ years of data engineering experience.
• 2+ years in a senior/staff role.
• Proficiency with Databricks, Spark, Delta Lake, dbt, and Python.
• Experience building large-scale cloud data platforms (Azure preferred).
• HIPAA-regulated data handling and PHI exposure.
• Strong leadership, collaboration, and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Design and evolve scalable, secure, cloud-native lakehouse platform using Databricks and Microsoft Fabric.
• Define data models, governance, and engineering best practices across the data lifecycle.
• Lead design reviews and guide teams on scalable architecture patterns.
• Drive long-term platform strategy and evaluate new technologies.
• Build batch and streaming pipelines for healthcare data (HL7/FHIR, EHR, APIs).
• Develop modular ingestion, quality, lineage, metadata, and observability frameworks.
• Create analytics-ready datasets for BI, analytics, and ML workloads.
• Ensure HIPAA-aligned access patterns and PHI handling.
• Architect Databricks workloads for reliability, performance, and cost.
• Integrate Databricks and Fabric with Azure and enterprise systems.
• Collaborate with product, data scientists, analysts, clinicians, and stakeholders.
• Mentor engineers and promote best practices and standards.
• Drive roadmap, platform evolution, and data strategy.
• Champion reliability, documentation, and governance.
