Job summary

Grubhub is seeking a Staff Data Engineer to provide technical leadership across core data systems and domain data products powering the business.

You will own architecture of multiple connected pipelines, mentor engineers, and set technical direction with product managers and platform partners. This role demands strong data modeling, SQL, and cloud experience in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in a science, programming or engineering field or equivalent experience.
• 6+ years of experience in data engineering with distributed systems knowledge.
• Deep expertise in dimensional data modeling for analytics at scale.
• Advanced SQL and hands-on with Spark, Hive, Trino and Flink.
• Multi-cloud data platforms across AWS and GCP; data pipelines and warehouses experience.
• Experience building batch and streaming pipelines with Airflow or Azkaban.
• Strong data quality practices: CI/CD, data validation and observability.
• Solid software fundamentals: Python; Java/Scala a plus; clean, tested code.
• Demonstrated technical leadership and ability to influence across teams.
• Clear communication with technical and executive stakeholders.
• Finance data pipelines, reconciliation and SOX compliance experience (nice to have).

Responsibilities

• Own architecture of critical data pipelines end-to-end and cross-system design decisions.
• Set data engineering standards across multiple teams: modeling, CI/CD, observability and data quality.
• Write performant, secure code and lead reviews beyond your team.
• Partner with product, analytics and platform teams to publish trusted datasets for reporting and analysis.
• Identify and mitigate technical debt, cost inefficiency and reliability risks across the stack.
• Evaluate new technologies and patterns to fit Grubhub's scale and needs.
• Mentor senior and mid-level engineers and participate in hiring to grow depth.
