Job summary

Affirm is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to drive the technical roadmap for Databases (Relational and KeyValue) across multi-region, highly available datastore platforms. You will influence product and engineering strategy, design scalable storage components, and mentor peers.

Ideal candidates have 8+ years in backend systems with Python or Kotlin, deep database expertise (MySQL/PostgreSQL), and experience with AWS, Spark, and Kubernetes.

Qualifications

8+ years designing backend systems at scale using Python or Kotlin.
5+ years database expertise with MySQL, PostgreSQL, TiDB/Vitess.
Strong experience with AWS, Spark and Kubernetes.
High-quality code and clear documentation.
Comfortable operating across low-level to system architecture.
Excellent written and verbal communication in a global team.

Responsibilities

Set technical strategy for the team on a yearly horizon.
Collaborate with product, infrastructure and SRE teams.
Design and build scalable datastore components for multi-region, high-availability use cases.
Develop control planes for managing hundreds of databases at scale.
Collaborate across teams in the product development lifecycle to ensure sustainability and trade-offs are understood.
Drive code quality, reviews, and architectural guidelines across the org.
