Job summary

Horizon3.ai is seeking a Staff Software Engineer, Backend to steer the technical direction of the Assessment Experience team, shaping how customers interact with NodeZero to identify and remediate risks. You will design and build backend services, APIs, and data models, and lead architectural decisions with a focus on reliability and outcomes.

This is a hands-on, leadership-heavy role where you will write production code, set design and operational standards, and mentor engineers across teams to

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience in CS/related field.
• 8+ years of professional software engineering with backend ownership.
• Experience building backend services in Python, Go, Rust, or TypeScript.
• Strong SQL and production experience with relational databases.
• Experience with cloud platforms and containerized apps (AWS/GCP/Azure, Docker).
• Experience designing APIs and event-driven systems.
• Data modeling and persistence for product-grade backends.
• Operational maturity: observability, testing, reliability practices.

Responsibilities

• Own the technical direction for Assessment Experience backend systems from concept to evolution.
• Design and build scalable backend services, APIs, and workflows.
• Lead architectural decisions balancing velocity, reliability, data correctness, and maintainability.
• Translate product goals into technical strategy with cross-functional partners.
• Drive cross-team collaboration to remove blockers and define clean interfaces.
• Contribute production code and uphold design quality, testing, and safe rollout practices.
• Mentor engineers and raise the technical bar through reviews and standards.
• Communicate complex concepts to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Support hiring by attracting and calibrating engineering talent.
• Use customer feedback to improve how NodeZero helps customers identify risk.
