Job summary

Gusto is hiring a Staff Software Engineer for the Payroll Platform team to design and evolve backend APIs and services powering payroll across the company. You will own a primary domain, ensure correctness and scalability, and partner with other engineering teams to raise the bar on payroll capabilities.

You will routinely work with AI-assisted development tools to accelerate delivery, improve code quality, and support broad platform adoption across multiple product teams.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of professional backend software engineering experience.
• Experience building and scaling internal platforms or APIs.
• Ability to work independently on ambiguous problems and deliver.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain backend services and APIs for payroll workflows.
• Own a primary domain within the Payroll Platform for health and scalability.
• Collaborate with other teams to design scalable solutions.
• Author architecture and design documents guiding platform direction.
• Improve performance, reliability, and observability as payroll scales.
• Collaborate with Product/Design/Data/Compliance to deliver compliant solutions.
