Job summary

CVS Health Digital is hiring a Staff Software Development Engineer to design and deliver scalable backend microservices in a regulated healthcare environment. You will lead initiatives across product, architecture, security, and DevOps to build reliable services.

You will work with Java, Spring Boot, RESTful APIs, and event-driven systems on Google Cloud Platform. This role requires strong collaboration, a focus on security and HIPAA compliance, and a commitment to quality, performance, and cost

Qualifications

• 7+ years of professional software development experience.
• 5+ years backend with Java/JEE, Spring Boot and Node.js.
• Experience building RESTful microservices and distributed systems.
• 3+ years deploying and operating services on Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
• Hands-on experience with Kafka or similar event-streaming platforms.
• Security fundamentals: OAuth2/OIDC, TLS, secrets management.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain backend microservices using Java/JEE and Spring Boot, exposing RESTful APIs that are secure, performant, and resilient.
• Implement event-driven patterns using Kafka (producers/consumers, schema evolution, partitioning, consumer groups).
• Model and exchange data using JSON with robust validation, versioning, and backward compatibility.
• Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines including unit/integration testing, static analysis, artifact promotion, and progressive delivery.
• Partner with Security and DevOps teams to integrate automated security controls (SAST, DAST, deps & image scanning).
• Apply 12-factor app principles, infrastructure-as-code, and configuration management best practices.
• Integrate backend services with EHR systems and healthcare data standards (HL7 v2, FHIR, SMART on FHIR, CCD/C-CDA).
• Ensure HIPAA compliance, data governance, and platform security requirements (encryption).
• Own production readiness: availability, latency, throughput and cost efficiency.
• Diagnose production issues, perform root cause analysis, and drive reliability improvements (SLIs/SLOs).
• Implement observability (logs, metrics, tracing) to support monitoring and incident response.
• Participate in architecture reviews, code reviews, and mentor junior engineers.
