Job summary

H1 is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer on the Real World Evidence team to shape backend systems powering vast healthcare data assets. You will collaborate with Product, Data Engineering, AI/ML and other engineering groups to turn complex problems into scalable, production-grade solutions.

Ideal candidates have 8+ years in backend development, strong Python, and extensive experience with distributed systems in cloud-native environments.

Qualifications

• 8+ years building scalable backend software and distributed systems in production.
• Strong design of scalable, reliable backend architectures and system tradeoffs.
• Proficiency in Python or a closely related language with ability to learn Python quickly.
• Experience delivering data-heavy, high-throughput systems in cloud-native environments.
• Ability to independently lead complex initiatives and collaborate across teams.
• Familiarity with distributed data technologies (Spark, Kafka, Hudi, Airflow) is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Build and scale backend services, APIs, and data processing pipelines for large healthcare datasets.
• Own architectural decisions for backend services and distributed systems.
• Lead cross-functional initiatives with product, data engineering, and AI/ML teams.
• Mentor engineers, review designs, and raise engineering standards across teams.
• Collaborate to reduce bottlenecks and accelerate delivery across platforms.
