Job summary

Tilt in Bangalore is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer to own a core part of the NIRA platform. You will shape technical direction, lead end-to-end delivery, and collaborate with global teams to deliver high-volume financial services.

You will mentor engineers, drive complex initiatives, and champion AI-native tooling while keeping systems simple. This hybrid role offers international collaboration, equity, and strong growth in a fast-moving fintech environment.

Qualifications

• 9+ years building web APIs, ideally in Java and Spring Boot.
• Deep experience with financial systems: state machines, complex lifecycles
• Strong grasp of distributed systems and queue-based architectures
• Proven track record scaling consumer products at high transaction volume
• End-to-end ownership: design, execution, and reporting on your own initiatives
• Comfortable deciding fast with incomplete information
• A mentor who actively raises the bar for engineers around you
• Genuine enthusiasm for AI dev tools, not just tolerance of them
• Bias for simplicity over clever abstractions

Responsibilities

• Own a domain: Lead strategy, design, and delivery for a core part of NIRA's platform.
• Set technical direction: Spot strategic needs and surface risks before they become problems.
• Drive complex initiatives: Take large, high-stakes projects from design to ship.
• Champion AI-native engineering: Push adoption of tools like Claude, Cursor, and Augment across the team.
• Mentor engineers: Level up engineers up to Senior, and raise the technical bar in Bangalore.
• Lead incidents: Own SEV1 and lower incident response through to resolution.
• Bridge global teams: Align with Principal Engineering and peers across NIRA, Cashalo, and US teams.
• Influence the roadmap: Shape product direction through technical tradeoffs, not just execution.
• Simplify systems: Cut complexity out of designs before it compounds.
