Job summary

Maryland Legal Aid (MLA) seeks an experienced Staff Attorney in the Workers’ Rights Unit in Baltimore to protect and advance the rights of low-wage workers. The role covers direct representation, community advocacy, and systemic impact work focused initially on wage theft and misclassification.

The attorney will handle cases, provide counsel, and participate in outreach while advancing MLA’s mission to promote economic security for Marylanders in need.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
• Admitted to practice in Maryland or eligible for admission in Maryland; out-of-state attorneys must be able to take the next bar exam.
• At least three (3) years of experience practicing as a lawyer.
• Knowledge of civil law, judicial procedures, and rules of evidence.
• Proficiency with Office 365 including Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Excellent research, critical thinking, writing, and communication skills.
• Self-starter with the ability to juggle multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
• Spanish language proficiency preferred.
• Ability to travel locally and regionally in Maryland.

Responsibilities

• Conduct client interviews and factual investigations.
• Draft pleadings, memoranda, and briefs for cases.
• Develop case theory and strategy for client representation.
• Prepare cases for negotiations, hearings, trials, and appeals.
• Engage with community groups and participate in outreach.
• Maintain case records using the LegalServer system.
