Job summary

Maryland Legal Aid (MLA) seeks a full-time general practice staff attorney for our Frederick, MD office. The attorney handles casework from intake to representation in courts and proceedings, collaborating across staff and with community partners to identify clients needing representation.

Responsibilities include drafting pleadings, researching, counseling clients, and developing case theory. Travel within Maryland and ongoing professional development are required.

Qualifications

• Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school.
• Admitted to practice in Maryland or eligible for Maryland admission; out-of-state attorneys must be able to take next bar.
• Knowledge of civil law, judicial procedures, and rules of evidence.
• Proficiency with Office 365 including Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Excellent research, critical thinking, writing, and communication skills.
• Ability to juggle priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Ability to provide quality legal advocacy for low-income clients.
• Ability to travel locally and regionally in Maryland as needed.

Responsibilities

• Screen clients for eligibility and make referrals as appropriate.
• Conduct preliminary and subsequent interviews with clients.
• Conduct factual investigation and legal research.
• Advise clients on investigation results and counsel regarding options.
• Draft pleadings, memoranda of law, and briefs.
• Develop case theory and strategy for client representation.
• Prepare cases and represent clients in negotiations, hearings, trials, and appeals.
• Participate in MLA training and other programs.
