Job summary

Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County (NLSLA) is seeking a licensed attorney to join the eviction defense team for the Stay Housed LA program. You will represent tenants in eviction actions across multiple LA courthouses, from pleadings to trial, reporting to the Supervising Attorney.

The role requires defending tenants, managing caseloads, and collaborating with pro bono partners and student staff in a hybrid work setting.

Qualifications

• JD from an accredited law school.
• Active California State Bar license (or eligibility to register within 30 days of hire).
• Strong writing, speaking, and organizational skills.
• Ability to work collaboratively and independently in a fast-paced environment.
• Commitment to confidentiality and ethical standards.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel, business communication platforms, and web-based case management platforms.
• Passion for NLSLA mission and advocating for the rights of low-income individuals.
• Bilingual abilities (Spanish or other LA threshold languages) are highly valued.

Responsibilities

• Defend tenants in unlawful detainer proceedings and administrative hearings.
• Manage a varied caseload with personalized, high-quality legal assistance.
• Lead Know Your Rights clinics for tenants.
• Prepare educational materials and engage in community events.
• Collaborate with pro bono partners and supervise student/volunteer staff.
• Work a hybrid schedule; on-site at least two days per week; limited remote work as needed.
• Travel to NLSLA program offices, courthouses, and other LA County locations as required.
