Job description

The Staff Assistant assists in supporting the Chief, Social Work Services (SWS) Service goles. In a supportive nature, the Staff Assistant performs or assists with a variety of non-clinical functions to support the overall mission, vision efficiency and effectiveness. Advanced skills in Excel, and PowerPoint are required.

GS-9 General Experience: For positions for which individual occupational requirements do not specify otherwise, general experience is 3 years of progressively responsible experience, 1 year of which was equivalent to at least GS-7, that demonstrates the ability to: Analyze problems to identify significant factors, gather pertinent data, and recognize solutions; Plan and organize work; and Communicate effectively orally and in writing. Such experience may have been gained in administrative, professional, technical, investigative, or other responsible work. Experience in substantive and relevant secretarial, clerical, or other responsible work may be qualifying as long as it provides evidence of the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) necessary to perform the duties of the position to be filled. Experience of a general clerical nature (typing, filing, routine procedural processing, maintaining records, or other nonspecialized tasks) is not creditable. Trades or crafts experience appropriate to the position to be filled may be creditable for some positions.

Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Applicants who have the 1 year of appropriate specialized experience, as indicated in the table, are not required by this standard to have general experience, education above the high school level, or any additional specialized experience to meet the minimum qualification requirements.

OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have the following: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or Two-full years progressively higher level graduate education leading to a degree or L.L.B or J.D. related degree OR, NOTE: Transcripts must be submitted with your application. Education cannot be credited without documentation.

OR, Combination: A combination of experience and education may be computed by first determining the applicant's total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required; then determining the applicant's education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; and then adding the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e., 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable experience (i.e., 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience/education to qualify for the GS-9 grade (Copy of unofficial transcripts required).

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Preferred Experience. Working with Human Resources & Patient Scheduling Physical Requirements: In accordance with VA Directive and Handbook 5019. The work is mostly sedentary. Occasionally, light physical effort may be required, such as that involved with walking, stair climbing, and carrying light office items. The work is performed in an office setting which requires normal safety precautions typical of offices and meeting rooms. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.
