Job summary

Carbon’s Staff Application Engineer role in Sunnyvale invites a seasoned, cross-functional leader to drive complex programs from concept to production readiness. You will own technical outcomes, mentor teammates, and shape scalable design-to-production workflows.

Onsite three days a week with occasional travel, you will educate customers on DLS best practices, guide tradeoffs, and liaison with Software, Product, and Materials teams to deliver defensible customer benefits.

Qualifications

• BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
• 8+ years in product development or product design.
• Proficiency with CAD/CAE software: SolidWorks, NX or CATIA; Magics, Rhino, Grasshopper.
• Experience with Python, Grasshopper, and automation for design-to-production.
• Knowledge of FEA, plastics materials, and manufacturing processes.
• Ability to manage ambiguity and drive cross-functional collaboration.
• Strong communication and mentoring skills.
• Proficient in Office tools and scripting.

Responsibilities

• Educate and influence customers on DLS best practices and manufacturability.
• Lead development across full lifecycle: design, printing, post-processing, validation.
• Drive technical strategy for assigned applications and customer benefits.
• Evaluate projects for production readiness, cost viability, and scalability.
• Serve as technical liaison between GTM needs and internal teams.
• Define test methods and iterate on feedback with customers.
• Contribute cross-vertical insights to accelerate success.
• Produce documentation, templates, and workflows to improve efficiency.
• Mentor and coach other engineers.
• Identify gaps in tools/processes and propose improvements.
