Job summary

Capital One seeks an experienced Staff AI Engineer to build scalable AI systems and governance while enabling real-time customer experiences. You will partner with engineers, scientists, and product leads to deliver AI components, model training, and inference across hybrid environments.

You will advance foundation model optimization, tooling, observability, and responsible AI practices across Capital One's Intelligent Foundations and Experiences teams.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, AI, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fields with at least 8 years of AI/ML experience, or a Master's with at least 6 years of AI/ML experience
• At least 8 years of experience programming with Python, Go, Scala, CUDA, or Java
• Experience designing AI systems with tradeoffs around cost, latency, throughput, and accuracy
• 8+ years deploying scalable and responsible AI solutions on cloud platforms (AWS, Google Cloud, Azure)
• Experience leading and mentoring engineering teams and influencing stakeholders up to VP level
• Experience with state-of-the-art AI techniques for training/inference optimization
• Proven ability to define enterprise AI architecture standards and data governance

Responsibilities

• Partner with cross-functional teams to deliver AI-powered products
• Design, develop, test, deploy, and support AI software components including foundation model training and inference
• Leverage Open Source and SaaS AI technologies (AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, VectorDBs, PyTorch)
• Invent model optimization techniques to improve performance, latency, and cost
• Contribute to the technical vision and long-term roadmap of foundational AI systems
• Set the technical direction for enterprise-wide AI architecture and deployment standards
• Own design/integration of model routing, caching, and orchestration for hybrid workloads
• Champion responsible AI, transparency, reproducibility, and fairness-by-design
• Drive education and dissemination of best practices through architecture councils and AI guilds
