Job summary

Copa Health is looking for a Full-Time Staff Accountant to join our Accounting team in Mesa, AZ. The role supports financial reporting for operating properties, development projects, and related investments, partnering with Development Managers, Asset Managers, Facilities, and external Property Management teams to ensure accurate, timely financial data.

Ideal candidates have a Bachelor’s in Accounting/Finance, 2–4 years of accounting experience, GAAP proficiency, and strong Excel.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
  • 2-4 years of accounting experience.
  • Experience with real estate, affordable housing, development, construction accounting, property accounting, or asset management preferred.
  • Working knowledge of GAAP and advanced Excel.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor general ledger activity and correct discrepancies.
  • Support month-end and year-end closing activities.
  • Assist with preparation of financial statements and internal reporting.
  • Track project costs against approved development budgets.
  • Monitor construction draws and funding sources.
  • Assist in lender, investor, and funding source reporting requirements.
  • Prepare reports for lenders, investors, regulatory agencies, and stakeholders.
  • Assist with HUD/LIHTC and housing program reporting as applicable.

Who We're looking for

We’re seeking a Full‑Time Staff Accountant to join our Accounting team.

The Staff Accountant supports the financial success of the Real Estate Development and Asset Management portfolio by ensuring timely, accurate, and actionable financial reporting for operating properties, development projects, affiliated entities, and related investments. This position serves as a critical business partner to Development Managers, Asset Managers, Facilities, and external Property Management teams, and organizational leadership by translating financial activity into meaningful information that supports sound decision‑making, compliance, risk management, and long‑term portfolio performance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitoring general ledger activity and correcting discrepancies.
  • Supporting month‑end and year‑end closing activities.
  • Assisting with the preparation of financial statements and internal reporting packages.
  • Tracking project costs against approved development budgets.
  • Monitoring construction draws and funding sources.
  • Assisting in lender, investor, and funding source reporting requirements.
  • Preparing reports required by lenders, investors, regulatory agencies, and other stakeholders.
  • Assisting with HUD, LIHTC, and other housing program reporting as applicable

Knowledge with:

  • Commitment to continuous learning and process improvement. Employee will be expected to participate in ongoing professional development related to: Real Estate Development, Asset Management, Affordable Housing financing Programs, Financial Reporting, GAAP, Internal Controls, Regulatory Compliance, Technology and Systems Improvements
  • Understanding of behavioral health systems, trauma‑informed design, and community‑based housing models.
  • In‑depth knowledge of public and private housing finance programs (e.g., LIHTC, HUD 811, Section 8 PBVs, HOME, CDBG, state trust funds).
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 2-4 years of accounting experience.
  • Experience with real estate, affordable housing, development, construction accounting, property accounting, or asset management preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
  • Experience with ERP, property management, and accounting software preferred.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of behavioral health or supportive services is highly preferred.
  • Familiarity with proformas, financial modeling, and real estate deal structuring.
