Job summary

LHH is seeking a detail-oriented Staff Accountant - Payroll in Mount Laurel, NJ to manage biweekly payroll for 300+ employees on a fully onsite schedule. You will support month-end close, journal entries, and audit readiness while ensuring accurate payroll processing and regulatory compliance.

The ideal candidate has a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting with 3–5 years of payroll experience and strong Excel skills, including Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and data analysis.

Staff Accountant - Payroll

Location: Mount Laurel, NJ
Schedule: Fully Onsite, Monday-Friday
Compensation: $60,000 - $68,000 annually

About the Opportunity

We are seeking a detail-oriented Staff Accountant - Payroll to join a growing Finance team. This position is responsible for the accurate and timely processing of payroll while supporting a variety of accounting functions, including account reconciliations, journal entries, month-end close activities, audit preparation, and financial analysis.

This role is ideal for an accounting professional who enjoys balancing payroll responsibilities with broader accounting exposure and is looking for an opportunity to expand their knowledge across multiple areas of finance. The successful candidate will possess strong analytical skills, exceptional attention to detail, and a collaborative, team-oriented mindset.

Key Responsibilities
Payroll Administration
  • Process biweekly payroll accurately and timely for 300+ employees
  • Review timesheets, employee changes, overtime, deductions, benefit elections, paid time off, and payroll adjustments
  • Audit payroll registers and supporting reports to ensure accuracy prior to submission
  • Process payroll corrections, retroactive payments, garnishments, and other payroll-related transactions
  • Maintain payroll records and ensure compliance with company policies and applicable regulations
  • Assist with year-end payroll activities and reporting requirements
Accounting & Financial Support
  • Prepare payroll-related journal entries and account reconciliations
  • Reconcile payroll taxes, benefits deductions, garnishments, and payroll liabilities
  • Prepare and maintain balance sheet and general ledger reconciliations
  • Support monthly, quarterly, and year-end close activities
  • Assist with financial reporting and analysis as needed
  • Prepare audit schedules and supporting documentation for internal and external audits
  • Research and resolve account discrepancies in a timely manner
Process Improvement & Team Support
  • Identify opportunities to enhance payroll and accounting processes
  • Assist with system implementations, upgrades, and process automation initiatives
  • Provide backup support across accounting and finance functions as needed
  • Collaborate with Human Resources and Finance teams to ensure accurate payroll processing and reporting
  • Participate in special projects and additional duties as assigned
Qualifications
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field
  • 3-5 years of accounting and payroll experience
  • Experience processing payroll for a mid-sized or large employee population
  • Strong understanding of payroll accounting, reconciliations, and general ledger processes
  • Experience working with payroll and HRIS platforms
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and data analysis functions
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving abilities
Preferred
  • Experience within a nonprofit or service-oriented environment
  • Experience with ERP systemsPaycom (Payroll/HRIS), NetSuite (ERP), Microsoft Excel
  • Experience administering employee benefits deductions and payroll reconciliations
  • Exposure to audit preparation and financial reporting
