Job summary

The Salvation Army North & Central Illinois Division is seeking a Staff Accountant to handle all accounting functions for assigned Corps or Units and to assist with additional accounting and finance projects.

Responsibilities include preparing journal entries, reconciliations, financial statements, cash flows, budgeting, and supporting audits. Strong GAAP knowledge and proficiency in PC and Microsoft Office are required.

Qualifications

• Accounting degree required; four-year degree in accounting preferred.
• One year experience processing AP, AR, and bank reconciliations; not-for-profit accounting a plus.
• GAAP knowledge essential; proficient with PC and Microsoft Office.
• Strong written and verbal communication; ability to work under pressure.

Responsibilities

• Prepare accounting transactions to maintain the general ledger, including journal entries, accounts receivable, payables, billing, and monthly reconciliations.
• Ensure proper classification, coding, and functionalization of transactions.
• Review payable and receivable transactions and assist in providing information to accounting staff.
• Prepare monthly general ledger reconciliations, monthly and annual financial statements, cash flows, and ad hoc reports.
• Monitor Corps or Unit cash balances and provide cash balance reports.
• Prepare bank reconciliations and review reconciliations for other units.
• Assist Officers in budget preparation and enter approved budgets.
• Prepare pro forma 990 Return of Organization Exempt From Tax as needed.
• Provide information for grant applications and monitor receipt of funds for compliance.
• Prepare work papers for internal and external auditors and assist with audit questions.
• Provide backup to other staff accountants as needed.
