Job summary

Westminster-Canterbury on Chesapeake Bay is seeking a Staff Accountant I to support the Accounting Department. Responsibilities include processing, recording, updating, analyzing, and reporting financial data in accordance with policies and procedures.

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field, at least one year of accounting experience, and strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Office Suite, and Google Workspace.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • Minimum of one year of progressively responsible accounting experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace, with strong working knowledge of spreadsheet and document management applications.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, with the ability to manipulate and analyze data, develop complex spreadsheets, and prepare clear, accurate, and useful management reports.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains and balances assigned general ledger accounts with monthly reconciliations.
  • Prepares general ledger entries to ensure accurate reporting of financial information.
  • Analyses data and develops complex spreadsheets; audits spreadsheets for accuracy and consistency.
  • Compiles accounting work, including reconciliations and reporting.
  • Maintains financial files and records for documentation and compliance.
  • Assists in the preparation of annual budget, monthly financials, audits, and cost reports.
  • Supports external audits with documentation and schedules.
  • Responds to accounting questions by researching data.
  • Communicates concerns or potential compliance issues to supervisor.

The Staff Accountant I is responsible for providing support to the Accounting Department by performing a variety of specialized accounting duties. Duties include processing, recording. updating, analyzing, and reporting financial data/information in compliance with established policies and procedures. Assists residents with account questions and concerns. Always model our core values of respect, passion, and professionalism, and hold others accountable for doing the same.

What You'll Do In This Role

  • Maintains and balances assigned general ledger accounts by performing monthly account reconciliations in a timely manner. Prepares general ledger entries to ensure accurate reporting of financial information.
  • Analyzes data and other information by developing complex spreadsheets. Audits spreadsheets to ensure information is accurately presented and consistent
  • Compiles a wide variety of accounting work assignments (account reconciliations, capital expenditure reporting, expense variances, etc.).
  • Maintains financial files and records for the purpose of ensuring the availability of documentation, compliance with established policies and procedures, and compliance with regulatory guidelines.
  • Assists in the preparation of the annual budget, monthly financials, annual audit, annual cost reports, statistical reporting, and other special projects as directed.
  • Assists in the external audit by providing supporting documentation, schedules and/or information on internal processes as required for the audit.
  • Answers accounting and financial questions by researching and interpreting data.
  • Communicates concerns or potential compliance issues to supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Completes all compliance and mandatory in-services and training.
  • All other duties as assigned.

The Experience You'll Bring

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

Preferred

  • CPA certification or active CPA candidacy.
  • Compensation Range: $55,000 - $60,000 (based on relevant experience)
