Job summary

Healthy Start, Inc. is seeking a Staff Accountant to maintain accounting processes and support the accounting team under the Controller. The role features a hybrid work structure with three days per week onsite in the Pittsburgh area.

Ideal candidates hold a Bachelor’s in Accounting or related field, with 2+ years in accounting, nonprofit experience preferred. Proficiency in QuickBooks, Excel, and payroll processing is expected.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in an accounting role.
  • Experience in non-profit accounting preferred.
  • Knowledge of commonly accepted accounting principles and procedures (GAAP).
  • Ability to compile and prepare reports and statements of financial data.
  • Ability to interpret accounting and cost accounting records.
  • Knowledge of payroll processing.
  • Experience with QuickBooks Desktop and/or online.
  • Proficient in MS Excel and Word.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks.
  • Absolute commitment to confidentiality of information.
  • Act 33/34 and FBI Clearances are required.
  • Valid PA Driver’s License with reliable transportation and insurance.
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain internal control environment and compliance with US GAAP and policies.
  • Prepare journal entries and reconciliations for month-end and year-end close.
  • Prepare weekly billings to funding sources as assigned.
  • Assist with Form 990 and other tax/compliance filings.
  • Prepare AP/AR, credit card transactions, and subsidiary reports.
  • Reconcile cash accounts and process weekly transfers.
  • Assist with annual audit preparation.
  • Assist with grant budgets and reports.
  • Assist with monthly financial information preparation.
  • Prepare detailed schedules as required.

Job description

The mission of Healthy Start is to improve maternal and child health and to reduce poor birth outcomes and infant mortality in Allegheny County.

Join our mission-driven organization that is part of a network of more than 100 community-based Healthy Start projects across the United States. Healthy Start programming spans Allegheny and Westmoreland Counties.

Our Staff Accountant is responsible for maintaining specific accounting processes and records of the organization and assisting the accounting department with various related tasks. This position will work under the direction of the Controller with a hybrid structure based on three days per week onsite.

What you will do:
  • Help maintain a strong internal control environment and compliance with US GAAP, other regulatory requirements, and internal accounting policies and procedures.
  • Prepare journal entries and reconciliations for month-end and year-end close.
  • Prepare weekly billings to various funding sources as assigned.
  • Assist with preparation of tax and compliance filings, including information needed for Form 990 and other reporting requirements.
  • Prepare monthly accounts payable/receivable, credit card transactions, and required subsidiary account reports.
  • Reconcile cash accounts and prepare weekly transfer requests.
  • Assist with annual audit preparation.
  • Assist with the preparation of grant budgets and reports.
  • Assist with the preparation of monthly financial information.
  • Prepare detailed schedules as required.
You’re a great fit if you have:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or other Business Accounting related field required.
  • 2 or more years of experience in an accounting role.
  • Experience in non-profit accounting preferred.
  • Knowledge of commonly accepted accounting principles and procedures.
  • Ability to compile and prepare reports and statements of financial data.
  • Ability to interpret accounting and cost accounting records.
  • Knowledge of payroll processing.
  • Experience with QuickBooks Desktop and/or online preferred.
  • Knowledge in accounting, as well as spreadsheet or other accounting related software such as MS Excel and Word and payroll software.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks at the same time.
  • An absolute commitment to protecting the confidentiality of employee and agency information handled daily.
  • Act 33/34 and FBI Clearances are required.
  • Must possess a valid unrestricted Pennsylvania Driver’s License and have reliable transportation; along with current and valid unrestricted automobile insurance and listing as an insured driver.
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination.
Physical Demands:
  • The work performed is 95% office work requiring sitting, keying, typing and answering phones, with occasional light lifting, carrying, stooping, standing, bending, walking and filing.
  • This position is hybrid and requires 3+ days in-office during regular organizational business hours.
  • Intense mental, visual and aural attention is required as the work involves responding to requests, planning or performing work that is at times, can be fast paced.
  • The other 5% of the position is conducted in the field. Candidate must possess the ability to work at locales outside of the office environment.
  • Out of town and overnight travel may also be required on occasion.
Compensation:

The starting salary range for this position is $50,000-$60,000 annually, commensurate with skills and experience. We offer a comprehensive and competitive benefits package. Benefits include:
