Role Description The Staff Accountant is a full-time, on-site role based in Kalamazoo, MI. This role is responsible for managing day-to-day accounting activities for client businesses, including recording transactions, reconciling bank and credit card accounts, maintaining general ledgers, and supporting month-end and year-end closing processes. The Staff Accountant prepares financial statements, assists with tax preparation and workpapers, and ensures the accuracy and completeness of client bookkeeping in line with firm standards and applicable regulations. The role also includes communicating with clients, answering routine accounting and tax questions, and collaborating with senior team members to identify issues, resolve discrepancies, and provide clear, actionable financial insights.

Qualifications

• Strong accounting and bookkeeping skills, including general ledger management, account reconciliation, and financial statement preparation.
• Working knowledge of tax concepts and compliance for individuals and small businesses, with experience supporting tax preparation and documentation.
• Proficiency with accounting software and related tools (e.g., QuickBooks or similar platforms, spreadsheets, and basic reporting systems).
• Analytical and problem-solving skills to identify discrepancies, improve processes, and support advisory work for client profitability and cash flow.
• Clear, professional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain financial information to clients in an accessible way.
• Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple client engagements and deadlines.
• Ability to work collaboratively in an on-site team environment and build positive, service-oriented relationships with clients.
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; progress toward or interest in a professional certification (e.g., CPA, EA) is a plus.
• Prior experience in public accounting or small-business accounting is preferred but not required for highly motivated candidates with strong fundamentals.
