Job description

Better Companies is a multi-brand financial services organization providing debt relief, tax support, and business funding solutions. We’re strengthening our operations, refining our systems, and building a more cohesive, efficient experience across our brands. Our approach is grounded in transparency, strong operational foundations, and well-structured processes that support reliable execution and scalable growth.

About the Role

Accurate financials are the foundation of our strategic growth. As our Staff Accountant, you will play a critical role in documenting our financial performance, analyzing data, and ensuring our accounting records are pristine. Reporting directly to the Accounting Manager, you will gain hands‑on exposure to everything from month‑end close and treasury management to executive reporting and KPI development.

We are committed to your professional development. Whether your goal is to pursue your CPA, advance into a Senior Accountant role, or deepen your analytical expertise, we provide the mentorship and collaborative environment to help you build a long‑term career lattice here. We value forward‑thinking team players who bring diverse perspectives to our financial operations.

Location: Irvine, CA (Fully In‑Office)

Compensation: $35.00 - $38.00 / hour

Job Type: Full‑Time (Non‑Exempt/Hourly)

What You'll Be Doing

In this role, priorities can shift rapidly based on reporting cycles, business demands, and strategic needs. Rather than following a rigid routine, you will balance core month‑end duties with dynamic cross‑departmental projects:

Core Accounting & Ledger Management
  • Prepare and post accurate general ledger journal entries and maintain subsidiary ledgers.
  • Execute timely balance sheet reconciliations across treasury, revenue, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, intercompany accounts, fixed assets, prepaid expenses, and accrued liabilities.
  • Collect, analyze, and verify financial data to reflect the organization’s financial standing accurately.
Reporting, Forecasting & Cash Management
  • Support the drafting of annual budgets, forecasting models, and expenditure tracking.
  • Assist in the preparation of executive‑level financial reports, KPI scorecards, and regulatory statements.
  • Prepare cash flow summaries, treasury tracking, and rolling monthly cash flow projections.
Agile Operational Support & Ad‑Hoc Projects
  • Partner with operations to calculate monthly commissions and resolve cross‑functional billing or ledger questions.
  • Pivot between analytical deep‑dives and urgent ad‑hoc financial requests as operational needs evolve.

Support the accounting supervisor with administrative and clerical tasks to maintain smooth day‑to‑day workflow.

Who You Are
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (Required).
  • Experience: 1–3 years of hands‑on accounting experience in a professional office setting.
  • Adaptability & Drive: Proven ability to multitask, pivot quickly when priorities shift, and handle ad‑hoc assignments with minimal ramp‑up time.
  • Technical Fluency: High proficiency in Microsoft Excel (complex formulas, lookups, pivot tables, data organization) and a strong command of standard accounting principles.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Clear verbal and written communication skills with a forward‑thinking, team‑first attitude.
  • Work Environment Requirements: Ability to work in an indoor office environment, operate standard office hardware, sit or stand for extended periods, and occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds using appropriate equipment.
Bonus Points (Great to Have)
  • Hands‑on experience navigating NetSuite ERP.
  • Prior background in Big 4 or Mid‑Tier public accounting.
  • Active CPA license or MBA in Accounting/Finance (or active pursuit thereof).
What We Offer

Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance coverage options.

Paid vacation and paid company holidays throughout the year.

  • Lunch is on us every Friday!

A vibrant team culture featuring regular quarterly social events, team outings, and annual holiday parties.

401(k) retirement savings plan options to support your long‑term financial health.

Direct access to accounting leadership and ongoing exposure to complex financial cycles to help build your career foundation.

We are an Equal Opportunity Employer and consider all qualified applicants without regard to race, color, religion (including religious dress and grooming practices), sex (including pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, and related medical conditions), gender, gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, marital status, national origin, ancestry, age, physical or mental disability, medical condition, genetic information, military or veteran status, or any other status protected by applicable federal, state, or local laws.
