Job summary

The BNSF Police Department in Barstow, CA is seeking a Special Agent in Charge for the Special Response Team (SRT). This full-time role leads high-risk rail security operations, plans deployments, and ensures compliance with safety and legal standards across the network.

Travel is extensive, training occurs at corporate HQ in Fort Worth and on-site, and relocation assistance may be provided. Candidates must meet peace officer standards and have strong leadership, tactical, and multi‑agency

Qualifications

• Must meet peace officer commissioning standards in the posting state and maintain a valid State Peace Officer License.
• 18 months of full-time peace officer experience.
• 8 years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience, including 3+ years in tactical/high-risk roles.
• Prior tactical team experience (SWAT/SRT).
• 5+ years of experience leading police team members.
• Willingness to travel frequently, irregular hours, 24/7 on-call availability.
• Proven leadership with personnel and operations responsibility.
• Strong knowledge in patrol and tactical operations and related case law.
• Ability to make quick operational decisions in high-risk environments.
• Experience coordinating multi-agency operations with federal partners.
• Advanced rail-specific safety and security knowledge.

Responsibilities

• Lead, supervise, and evaluate SRT Special Agents for readiness and training compliance.
• Plan and execute high‑risk rail operations including counter‑trespass and critical infrastructure protection.
• Manage schedules, rosters, and field operations with real‑time situational awareness.
• Serve as on-scene or tactical commander during SRT deployments with federal, state, and local partners.
• Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, and department policies, including use‑of‑force and evidence handling.
• Oversee procurement and maintenance of specialized equipment and protective gear.
• Develop operational plans, threat assessments, and after‑action reports for continuous improvement.
• Provide subject‑matter expertise on rail‑specific operations and emergency protocols.
• Participate in national rail security exercises and joint operations.
