Job description

About this position

About AtlasBase

AtlasBase is a fast-growing pioneer in Molecular Computing, bridging the gap between traditional IT and biotechnology. We are redefining global IT infrastructure by driving breakthroughs in both Molecular Compute and Molecular Data Storage. By commercializing synthetic DNA-based technologies at IT scale, AtlasBase delivers ultra-high-density, low-maintenance, and carbon-conscious solutions built for the explosive growth and value of the world's data. Leveraging nature’s most durable medium, we provide a virtually permanent foundation that transforms how the world processes and secures its most critical information.

To help drive this innovation, we are seeking a detail-oriented, hard-working, and highly motivated Sr. Research Associate/Scientist to join our Protein Production team. The successful candidate will play a critical role in supporting our research and development pipelines by ensuring the consistent and high-quality production of recombinant proteins. This requires technical proficiency in protein purification techniques and a strong commitment to accurate record-keeping and team collaboration. Above all, we are looking for a highly trainable candidate with a strong work ethic who is eager to learn and grow with the company.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute recombinant protein purification using ÄKTA systems and gravity column chromatography, taking ownership of daily tasks while working under the general guidance of a supervisor.
  • Run purification workflows from small-scale runs to large-scale production to ensure consistent yield and purity, collaborating with your supervisor on scale-up strategies.
  • Independently troubleshoot routine expression and purification protocols to improve process efficiency, consulting with a supervisor on complex issues or major process changes.
  • Perform protein quantification, quality assessment, and characterization to ensure deliverables meet project specifications.
  • Maintain detailed inventory records of purified proteins and raw materials; strictly adhere to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and documentation standards for data integrity.
  • Maintain clear written and verbal communication with your supervisor and cross-functional teams to ensure alignment on project timelines, and present your scientific findings at team meetings.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry, Biotechnology or a related scientific discipline.
  • Proven experience with a wide range of protein purification techniques, including working with various chromatography resins and instrumentation (e.g., ÄKTA systems).
  • Strong attention to detail, ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment, and a proactive team-player mindset.
  • Familiarity with laboratory safety protocols and experience maintaining rigorous scientific documentation.
  • Prior experience transitioning from laboratory-scale to pilot-level manufacturing and proficiency in column packing procedures is preferred.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Work will be performed onsite in office and laboratory space located in South San Francisco.
  • Mobility: Must be able to move about the laboratory and office environment regularly. This includes standing and walking for extended periods, often up to 6–8 hours per day.
  • Manual Dexterity: Must have fine motor skills and steady hands to handle delicate instruments, operate laboratory equipment, pipette accurately, and perform repetitive benchwork with precision.
  • Lifting/Carrying: Must be able to lift and carry up to 40 pounds occasionally, such as boxes of lab supplies or equipment.
  • Visual Acuity: Must have sufficient visual acuity to read small print on labels, instrument displays, and computer monitors. Close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus are required.
  • Environmental Conditions: Frequently exposed to typical laboratory conditions, including biological samples, chemicals, and reagents. Must be able to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as lab coats, gloves, and safety goggles as required.
