Job Summary

Senior Trailer Repair Technician – DOT Management Level – Individual Contributor at Cox Automotive (Cox Fleet). Dedicated on‑site shop position performing certified DOT inspections, preventative maintenance, and light to advanced repairs on trailer systems.

Hourly Compensation

Base pay range: $29.42 – $44.13 per hour. Additional compensation may include commissions and incentive programs.

Responsibilities

• Perform DOT inspections, preventative maintenance (PM), and required repairs on light, medium, and heavy‑duty trailers.
• Execute routine maintenance tasks such as oil changes, battery checks, and equipment lubrication.
• Use hand tools, precision instruments, welding equipment, lifts, and jacks to service trailer brakes, airbags, pumps, engines, liftgates, steering systems, and other components.
• Diagnose and repair complex trailer issues, triage repairs for Shop Trailer Technician I/II, and support advanced diagnostics.
• Manage and document all work in company systems (Repair Orders, Karmak application) and upload photos of work performed and parts used.
• Determine parts requirements, coordinate with the Shop Parts Department to secure components, and maintain a clean, safe work environment.
• Communicate with Service Writers and Shop Manager to assess customer needs, provide information, and discuss repair estimates and findings.
• Maintain shop‑assigned service trucks, conduct daily pre/post‑trip inspections, and perform safety checks in compliance with OSHA, EPA, and DOT regulations.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED (or equivalent combination of experience and certification).
• Minimum of 5 years of related experience (alternative combinations of education and 3–7 years of experience are acceptable).
• Ability to lift, bend, climb, and stand for extended periods; capacity to perform moderate heavy‑labor tasks.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to maintain a Driver Qualification File.
• Must complete DOT‑regulated pre‑employment background screening, DOT physical or provide a valid DOT medical card with at least four months remaining.
• Must be at least 21 years old.

Skills & Abilities

• Strong knowledge of trailer parts and systems – design, repair, and maintenance.
• Ability to use logic, reasoning, and judgment to evaluate diagnostic options and recommend solutions.
• Effective communication skills for conveying technical information to customers and team members.
• Physical stamina for sustained manual work and operating tools in an automotive shop environment.

Certifications

• ASE T8 (PMI) – required or within 18 months of hire.
• ASE 608/609 – required.
• ASE T4 (Brakes), T5 (Suspension), T6 (Electrical & Electronic Systems), T7 (HVAC) – preferred.
• CDL‑A License.
