Job Summary

Sr. Shop Trailer Technician – Cox Automotive (Cox Fleet) – Position requires on‑site shop work for light, medium, and heavy‑duty trailers. The role focuses on certified DOT inspections, preventative maintenance, light and advanced repairs, diagnostics, and customer service within a shop environment.

Compensation

Hourly base rate: $26.73 – $40.10, depending on location and experience. New‑hire bonus of $3,000 (50% after 30 days, 50% after 180 days). Potential commission, incentive programs, and weekly pay. Benefits start Day One.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Perform DOT inspections, PM inspections, and follow‑up repairs for trailers of all weight classes.
• Conduct routine maintenance such as oil changes, battery checks, and lubrications.
• Use hand tools, precision instruments, welding equipment, lifts, and jacks to repair or replace trailer components (brakes, air lines, engines, liftgates, steering systems, panels, etc.).
• Diagnose and triage complex repairs, collaborating with Shop Trailer Technicians I/II.
• Maintain a clean, safe shop environment and assist in end‑of‑day cleanup.
• Select and procure necessary parts through the Shop Parts Department.
• Document work, upload photos, and complete DOT and other required paperwork using company devices or the Karmak application.
• Communicate with Service Writers and Shop Managers to manage estimates, approvals, and purchase orders.
• Perform safety checks and pre/post‑trip inspections on assigned service trucks.

Requirements

• High School Diploma (or GED) with 5 years of related experience.
• Alternatives: Any higher degree or certification plus 3 years of experience; or 7 years of experience.
• Possess a set of hand tools needed for the job.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to maintain a Driver Qualification File.
• At least 21 years old; able to pass a DOT‑regulated background screen and physical.
• Current DOT medical card with >4 months remaining, or qualify for a DOT physical.

Certifications (Preferred or Required)

• ASE T8 (PMI) certification – required or within 18 months of hire.
• ASE 608/609 certification.
• CDL‑A license.
• ASE T4 (Brakes), T5 (Suspension), T6 (Electrical & Electronic Systems), T7 (HVAC).

Skills & Abilities

• Knowledge of trailer systems, parts, and repair techniques.
• Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
• Physical stamina – ability to lift, stand, and walk for long periods, perform moderate heavy labor, and occasionally repetitive tasks.
• Excellent communication and organizational skills.
• Logical reasoning and problem‑solving abilities.
