Job description

We are seeking a Sr. Research Assistant. This position is with Dr. Paul Locke’s research team in the Environmental Health and Engineering Department (EHE) in the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The team is a small, close-knit group working to bridge the gap between science and policy. The focus of this team is to help push alternatives to animal methods forward to improve science and better public health. The Senior Research Job has specific duties for the team but also enough flexibility to start a new relevant research project independently.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Carries Out Environmental Health Research on topics such as:

  • Using non-animal alternatives in toxicity testing and drug development
  • Policy development at federal agencies regarding non-animal alternatives
  • Private sector progress on non-animal alternatives

Leads Briefings for US Congressional Staff on Non-Animal Toxicology Issues

  • Carries out research on Congressional offices to identify targets for lobbying.
  • Prepares summaries of issues for Congressional staff.
  • Leads meetings where ideas are presented and discussed with Congressional staff with assistance and preparation from the rest of the research team.
  • Writes summaries of each meeting with Congressional staff and answers all staff questions.

Directs Social Media Outreach Efforts for the Toxicology Policy Program/Toxicology Policy Team

  • Coordinates meetings with social media consultant.
  • Measures progress towards milestones.
  • Delegates social media posts across all platforms (Twitter, LinkedIn, and team website).
  • Keeps website up to date with blog posts, articles, and team member information using Squarespace.
  • Designs content for social media posts using Canva.

Coordinates & Leads Weekly Toxicology Policy Team Meetings

  • Surveys team members to get project status updates.
  • Creates weekly agenda with updates on the team and deadlines for projects.

Makes Intellectual Contributions to Scientific & Policy Practice & Research Activities

  • Suggests themes for research and establishes team priorities.
  • Creates abstracts to participate in relevant conferences in the United States and internationally.
  • Contributes to written manuscripts and funding proposals.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline. MPH or MS in relevant field preferred.
  • Two years of related experience.
  • Additional graduate level education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • A MHS, MS, MPH in environmental health or equivalent.
  • Great understanding of toxicology and alternatives to animal methods.
  • Two to Three years of experience.
  • An understanding of the US government.
  • Experience reading and writing policy.

Classified Title: Sr Research Assistant

Starting Salary Range: Min $40,100 - Max $70,180 Annually ($40,100 budgeted; Commensurate with experience)
Employee group: Full Time

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
