How will you make an impact? The Senior Principal Mechanical Integration Engineer will have a critical understanding of manufacturing processes for thermal components and solid comprehension of thermal design and analysis to lead and oversee the mechanical systems essential for Data Center Infrastructure functionality. This role will involve developing specifications, selecting key components, component placement, selecting fastening methods, and transitioning design to manufacturing. Additionally, the position includes leading test process implementation and equipment selection to maintain the highest standards of operational excellence and reliability.

Job Title: Senior Principal Mechanical Design Engineer
Organization: Data Center Infrastructure Team
Location: Remote* OR Austin, TX
*Requires up to 30% domestic and/or international travel (rare)

What will you do?
  • Have a strong background in liquid cooling technology used in data center design and buildout.
  • Act as the subject matter expert on all matters related to single phase and two-phase liquid cooling applications within hyperscale data centers, including primary and in-rack cooling solutions.
  • Have expertise in both enclosed and facility-based cooling systems.
  • Have experience with current Cooling Distribution Unit (CDU) technologies.
  • Ability to detail operational expectations for LC Racks, Manifolds and other LC infrastructure (Pressure Ratings, Temperature Ranges (in/outlet), Flow Uniformity and Durability).
  • Proficiency with testing concepts for leaks/mitigation and hydrostatic pressure validation, flow resistance analysis, and corrosion assessments to comply with international standards such as ASME and ISO.
  • Knowledgeable on High-Density Liquid Cooling (HDLC) products utilized in global data center applications.
  • In depth knowledge of rack manifold manufacturing, design and function (Machining and Welding, Surface Finishing, Material and Surface Treatments, Post-Production Cleaning, Flow Optimization, Thermal Expansion, Connection Interfaces, High-Point Vents and Low-Point Drains).
  • Review CAD/Technical Data Packages to determine and validate mechanical design requirements for components and their functions within a system environment.
  • Responsible for understanding product specifications, plumbing, and hydronic systems to lead reviews with all disciplines ensuring the design and components meet performance and applicable code requirements.
  • Ability to evaluate thermal data collected from engineering or manufacturing tests to confirm product conformance to thermo-mechanical requirements, testing and modeling.
  • Knowledgeable in fabrication practices and installation of copper, stainless steel and aluminium piping for large-scale cooling systems.
  • Understanding and conducting stress and flow analysis to ensure that the piping systems can withstand operational conditions without failure.
  • Collaborate with project managers on design quotations.
  • Provide technical input to identify and mitigate project risks that may impact project plans and schedules.
  • Conduct component selection for pipes, fittings, and valves based on factors like fluid type, temperature, pressure and corrosion resistance in chillers, HVAC systems and liquid cooling loops.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and ensure system compatibility and integration for liquid cooling systems at the rack, site, equipment, and system levels, including water chillers, heat exchangers, Air Handler Units, and more.
  • Ability to prepare technical specifications for piping components and systems, including testing procedures, installation procedures and maintenance guidelines.
  • Utilize CAD tools, CAE tools, and equipment for engineering tasks.
  • Evaluate/optimize manufacturing assembly processes by designing, modifying, and testing manufacturing methods and equipment, conferring with equipment vendors, and soliciting observations from production team.
  • Adept at creating detailed mechanical design of components, sub-assemblies, and system integration.
  • Capable of creating a Bill of Materials (BOM) for release to manufacturing.
  • Perform tests, debug, and validation of mechanical systems and support manufacturing processes.
