Job summary

OtterBase in Warren, Michigan is seeking a Senior Mechanical Designer to lead fixture and tooling projects. You will create detailed 3D and 2D CATIA V5 models and ensure designs meet specifications, safety, and ergonomic standards, working on-site in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

The role requires at least seven years in mechanical design within automation, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to validate designs and collaborate across teams to deliver innovative plant

Qualifications

• Education: High School Diploma or GED, with preferred certifications.
• Minimum 7 years of mechanical design experience in automation.
• CATIA V5 proficiency is essential; NX/UG/Inventor a plus.
• Experience designing Body-In-White weld fixtures (BIW) or MIG fixtures.
• Strong knowledge of mechanical design, layouts and safety standards.
• Ability to create detailed 3D models and engineering drawings.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

As a Senior Mechanical Designer, you will play a pivotal role in designing custom fixtures and complex tooling systems. Working with minimal supervision, you will bring customer concepts to life through detailed 3D and 2D models using CATIA and other leading design software. You will ensure that designs not only meet technical specifications and industry standards but also push the boundaries of innovation in manufacturing and plant layout validation.

• Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent (additional technical certifications or coursework preferred).
• Experience: Minimum of 7 years of mechanical design in an automation environment.
• Technical Skills:
  • Demonstrated experience, ideally five years, in designing Body-In-White weld fixtures (Resistance Welding) or MIG welding fixtures.
  • Advanced proficiency with CATIA V5 software is essential.
  • Experience with additional design software such as NX, Unigraphics or Inventor is a plus.
  • Strong familiarity with mechanical design principles and plant layout validation.
  • Proficient in creating detailed 3D models, layouts, and engineering drawings.
  • Working knowledge of industry safety and ergonomic standards.
  • Strong analytical and logical problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to perform engineering calculations and validate design integrity.

Work type & Expected hours of work: Regularly works on-site at our Warren location. Work schedules are flexible around core business hours of 8am-5pm, Monday to Friday. This position is for regular, full-time work and may require coming in early, working late, or working on weekends to meet the needs of the business.
