Job summary

Frey Consulting Group in Warren, Michigan is seeking a Mechanical Designer to convert process concepts into production-ready robotic systems for automotive, electronics, and warehouse automation. You will produce SolidWorks models, detailed drawings, and BOMs for robotic cells, and partner with controls and fabrication teams to ensure buildable designs.

Qualifications

• 5+ years designing industrial machinery or robotic tooling, with a portfolio of released 3D models that went into production.
• WELDING Tooling, Honda and CATIA.
• Expert SolidWorks (or equivalent) including weldments, sheet metal, large assemblies, and GD&T.
• Hands-on knowledge of fabrication, machining, pneumatics, and servo-driven mechanisms so designs are buildable on first try.
• Proven ability to hit drawing-release dates on multi-station automation projects.
• Associate degree in Mechanical Design or equivalent experience; PE or advanced CAD certifications a plus.

Responsibilities

• Deliver complete SolidWorks 3D models, detailed drawings, and BOMs for robotic cells and transfer systems that meet cycle-time, payload, and GD&T targets.
• Release packages that enable fabrication and assembly within quoted lead times, reducing engineering change orders by 30% versus prior designs.
• Collaborate with controls, tooling, and simulation engineers to resolve interferences and kinematic issues before steel is cut, keeping projects on the 8–12 week design-to-build cadence.
• Specify commercial components and custom fabrications that stay inside budget while achieving required stiffness, repeatability, and safety ratings.
• Support shop-floor build and debug by answering RFIs same-day and issuing red-line updates that keep installation on schedule.
• Document lessons-learned so subsequent cells reuse proven sub-assemblies, cutting design hours 15% year-over-year.

Client designs and builds the robotic assembly systems that keep factories moving. As Mechanical Designer you will convert process concepts into production-ready machines that cut cycle times, raise quality, and scale output for customers in automotive, electronics, and warehouse automation. Every model you release lands on the shop floor and ships to a real line—your work is measured in uptime, not slides.

Performance Objectives

• Deliver complete SolidWorks 3D models, detailed drawings, and BOMs for robotic cells and transfer systems that meet cycle-time, payload, and GD&T targets, with 95 % first-pass approval from manufacturing.
• Release packages that enable fabrication and assembly within quoted lead times, reducing engineering change orders by 30 % versus prior designs.
• Collaborate with controls, tooling, and simulation engineers to resolve interferences and kinematic issues before steel is cut, keeping projects on the 8–12 week design-to-build cadence.

You report to the Mechanical Engineering Manager and sit with a 12-person design team in Warren, Michigan. Tools include SolidWorks (PDM vault), Autodesk Inventor, and in-house FEA. You have access to the build floor, supplier catalogs, and a dedicated checker. Travel is rare; most work is local with occasional customer-site reviews.
