Senior Laboratory Assistant, General Laboratory

Full Time, 80 Hours Per Pay Period, Night Shift

Morristown-Hamblen Overview:

Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare System has 167 licensed beds and 23 emergency suites. The hospital offers outstanding ancillary services including Laboratory, Radiology, and Therapy services. At our Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, women can have their annual mammograms, biopsies, and meet with a nurse navigator if needed. The Women’s Center features six newly remodeled labor and delivery suites and a secure nursery for newborns. Position Summary:

This role requires performing blood specimen collection and handling for inpatients and outpatients, ensuring customer safety and comfort, managing clerical and computer duties, and courier responsibilities as needed.

Responsibilities
  1. Prioritize customer service and specimen collection.
  2. Transcribe medical orders promptly, order tests, follow-up on verbal orders with written confirmation.
  3. Answer departmental calls, transfer calls appropriately, resolve issues, assist with test result retrieval, and handle confidential information securely.
  4. Use HIS, LIS, and reference lab systems appropriately.
  5. Manage manual systems during computer outages for ordering, collection, verification, and charting.
  6. Process specimens correctly, including accessioning, recognizing test priorities, centrifugation, separation, logging, and handling special collection requirements.
  7. Collect blood samples from venous and capillary sites using aseptic techniques, label specimens accurately, and use blood bank armbands properly.
  8. Ensure proper patient identification using hospital armbands and verbal confirmation.
  9. Dispose of needles/sharps and gloves safely.
  10. Maintain a clean and sanitary work environment.
  11. Participate in laboratory quality improvement activities.
  12. Adhere to policies and regulations, including Exposure Control, Chemical Hygiene, Disaster Plan, Joint Commission standards, CLIA, and state regulations.
  13. Assist with difficult blood draws if needed.
  14. Follow safety standards, complete annual education, and engage in quality initiatives.
  15. Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Minimum Education: No specific requirement; a combination of education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma or GED is acceptable. Preference may be given to those with a HS diploma or GED.

Minimum Experience: None required.

Licensure Requirement: Certification by NCA, ASCP, ASPT, or similar is desirable.
