Senior Lab Technician, Southern Medical Group - South Knoxville

Full Time, 80 Hours Per Pay Period, Day Shift

Covenant Medical Group is Covenant Health’s employed and managed medical practice organization, with more than 300 top Physicians and providers spanning the continuum of care in 20 cities throughout East Tennessee. Specialties include cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, cardiovascular surgery, endocrinology, gastroenterology, general surgery, infectious disease, neurology, neurosurgery, obstetrics and gynecology, occupational medicine, orthopedic surgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation, primary care, pulmonology, reproductive medicine, rheumatology, sleep medicine and urology.

Position Summary:

Performs routine and specialized clinical lab tests for use in the diagnosis and treatment of patients by physicians. Collects and properly handles venous and capillary blood specimens.

Responsibilities

  1. Maintain established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program and safety standards.
  2. Perform other duties as assigned by the Laboratory Medical Director or office manager, including scheduling and ordering of supplies from preferred vendors.
  3. Assist in the implementation and evaluation of new projects including the development of policies and procedures and consideration of new lab equipment.
  4. Check and follow-up on incomplete reference Lab reports.
  5. Generate, verify, submit and post reference lab billing.
  6. Properly collect blood samples from venous and capillary sites as required by the clinic.
  7. Handle all specimens properly including prompt transport to the lab, special tube requirements, on ice as needed, preparation and preservation without contamination, etc. Identify and label specimens.
  8. Perform all routine and specialized lab tests trained for as assigned.
  9. Run, maintain and/or repair laboratory equipment.
  10. Perform and document quality control samples in assigned work area.
  11. Clean and sterilize equipment, glassware and instruments.
  12. Prepare solutions, reagents and stains according to standard formulas and procedures.
  13. Answer phones and respond to physician inquiries regarding lab results.
  14. Maintain required records, reports, statistics, logs, files to comply with requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies, i.e. CLIA.
  15. Act as CLIA trainer for clinic as appropriate and have thorough knowledge of lab requirements.
  16. Inform patients of test results and medication changes or adjustments as needed after physician reviews and approves report.
  17. Comply with OSHA standards, Universal Precautions, safety manuals and laboratory policies and procedures including wearing gloves and using safety needles.
  18. Plan work to ensure maximum productivity with minimum amount of “carry over” work, while keeping overtime to a minimum. Communicate needed information about patient samples, instrument performance, and CPT codes for testing ordered to the appropriate staff.
  19. Maintain knowledge of all insurance payor billing requirements and lab billing procedures to maximize profitability of lab.
  20. Use the fundamentals of AIDET when interacting and communicating with patients.
  21. Attend meetings as required and participate on committees as directed.
  22. Collaborate with the patient, physician, and other care team members as part of a team-based approach to overall patient care.

Qualifications

Minimum Education: None specified; will accept any combination of formal education and/or prior work experience sufficient to demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skill and ability needed to perform the essential tasks of the job, typically such as would be equivalent to a high school diploma or GED. Preference may be given to individuals possessing a HS diploma or GED.

Minimum Experience: Must possess basic computer skills and medical terminology. Must have at least three (3) years experience in each of the following categories: Phlebotomy, Waived and Non-waived testing. OSHA and CLIA annual training. Medical Office Experience Helpful.
