Job summary

Job description

Installs, repairs, and maintains heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems and associated equipment.

Responsibilities

• Installs, repairs, maintains, and services a wide variety of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment including oil and gas fired hot water and low‑pressure steam boiler burners, pumps, compressors, condensers, electronic and pneumatic temperature control systems, and related parts and assemblies.
• Screws, bolts, and brazes parts to assemble HVACR components such as motors, pneumatic and electronic controls, switches, gauges, wiring harnesses, valves, pumps, compressors, condensers, and pipes.
• Diagnoses malfunctions of HVACR equipment, evaluates and tests equipment and component operations, dismantles systems and components, replaces and adjusts defective or worn parts.
• Records and maintains accurate records of work performed, time and materials used, prepares lists to ensure efficient use of parts and supplies to be requisitioned for assigned jobs.
• Drives an automobile or light truck to transport workers and equipment to and from job sites; lifts, carries HVACR equipment, parts, tools, and supplies; climbs ladders, crawls, bends, and stoops to access HVACR systems.
• Communicates appropriately and frequently with faculty, school administrators, supervisors and other employees.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or an appropriate equivalent.
• State of Maryland journey HVACR license or an equivalent that fulfills the experiential requirement.

Licenses and Certifications

• State of Maryland journey HVACR license or an equivalent.
• Type I and II technician's certification (CFC certification) approved by the United States Environmental Protection Agency.
• Valid class C Maryland driver's license or an equivalent.
• Baltimore County journey gas fitter license or an equivalent (preferred).
• All required licenses and certifications must be maintained throughout employment in this position.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of the principles and practices of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration repair; knowledge of Environmental Protection Agency regulations governing refrigerant handling and disposal.
• Skill in the installation, repair, and maintenance of heating, ventilating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems and associated equipment; skill in testing and diagnosing malfunctioning equipment and systems; skill in determining necessary procedures for repair; skill in selecting appropriate tools, equipment, and parts needed to complete work; skill in leading and instructing others; skill in keeping records of work performed.

Physical and Environmental Conditions

• Heavy physical labor including frequent walking, standing, kneeling, reaching, bending, digging, lifting, and carrying objects of moderate to heavy weight; ascending/descending ladders, scaffolds, stairs; use of tools and equipment.
• Work in confined spaces and proximity to loud machinery; frequent access to crawl spaces, roofs, trenches, pits, manholes, attics, and tunnels.
• Recognition of exposure to live circuits and operating machinery in adverse weather conditions, travel to sites throughout Baltimore County.

Conditions of Employment

The person is designated as essential personnel and is required to work when schools and/or offices are closed during adverse weather conditions or any other emergency. Scheduled overtime, emergency overtime, and temporary alternative schedules or shifts may be required. A license to drive in the State of Maryland and the ability to drive a pickup truck or van is required. Licensure must be verified and maintained in good standing without lapse. Attendance in training for gas fitter licensure or related work certifications is required.

Compensation and Benefits

FLSA Status: Non‑Exempt. Salary: $30.37 – $45.83 per hour (Grade 11/AFSCME pay scale). Other compensation: eligible for compensatory time per AFSCME Master Agreement. Retirement: Eligible for the Baltimore County Employees' Retirement System.
